Groove and feel play a major role in how a track translates on the dance floor, often more than sound choice or complexity. This session focuses on how rhythm, timing, and the interaction between elements shape the feel of a track.
You’ll learn how drums, bass, and other rhythmic parts work together, how small timing and pattern decisions affect movement, and how to create ideas that groove rather than sound rigid or mechanical. This workshop is open to producers of all levels who want their tracks to feel more dynamic and engaging.

Join OutSmart NYC for an interactive virtual workshop designed for DJs, producers, artists, and nightlife professionals committed to creating safer, more inclusive music spaces.
Rooted in trauma-informed and community-based prevention strategies, this session will explore how sexual and gender-based violence shows up in nightlife, how to recognize and interrupt unsafe dynamics, and how artists can build consent culture both behind the booth and on the dancefloor. We’ll also discuss navigating power dynamics with venues, promoters, and labels while protecting your own boundaries and safety.
Participants will leave with practical bystander intervention tools, harm-reduction strategies, and survivor-centered resources to support themselves and their communities.
OutSmartNYC is a collective of nightlife industry professionals, prevention educators, and support service providers collaborating to end sexual violence in nightlife and party spaces, and create safer nightlife communities. Our unique partnership allows us to offer services that are industry-specific, proactive, and trauma-informed. Our mission is to prevent and end sexual violence in nightlife and party spaces. We do this through training, advocacy, community organizing and referrals to supportive services.

This workshop builds on the skills from the“Creating Chops” workshop, teaching you how to create “flips” — the process of taking an existing song and transforming it into a new, original version. You’ll explore how to identify usable elements from the original track, manipulate them into new sounds, chop and rearrange samples, and incorporate them into your own arrangement to produce a fully reimagined track.

Amanda Garcia Davenport joined the Recording Academy in 2020 and now leads national membership outreach for Dance Electronic, Pop, New Age, Ambient, and Chant genres. She also supports the Texas, Memphis, and Pacific Northwest Chapters. Her career spans music marketing, public relations, and mental health advocacy through roles at Visit Austin, the SIMS Foundation, and Giant Noise PR. Amanda lives in South Austin with her family and their dog Chico.

Duval Folx, a BIPOC dance party started in the bible belt south of Jacksonville Florida was Born in 2018 as a response to the rise in gender-based violence, Duval Folx became a mutual aid dance party and a braver space for BIPOC communities. Geexella reflects on what it truly means to build safer spaces, recognizing that declaring a space “safe” does not make it so. They will share tangible practices for cultivating community spaces that honor, affirm, and center those most impacted.
